WHO ARE YOU?

September is Classical Music Month and Jazz is American Classical Music!

The most pressing news in August was the devastation of Hurricane Irene that ripped up the Eastern Coast of the United States leaving 11 dead and thousands homeless. We send our light and love to the families of the victims of this storm.  Here, in South Florida, we are grateful to have been spared the fury of Irene, however, The Bahamas suffered greatly, although no lives were lost.

Musically, it's been a quiet summer.  Most clubs have closed with only one or two still offering a healthy menu of jazz and blues.  There is light at the end of the tunnel, though. A new jazz club is preparing for its grand opening on Thursday, September 22. The owner of Ciao Pasta & Grill, Brian Harris will feature Blues and Jazz at the Blue Velvet Lounge, beginning September 23, when Bluuz Mama Juanita Dixon will bring her blues, every Friday night, and Diva Joan Cartwright will be swinging jazz on Saturdays, starting September 24. We're looking forward to a long and fruitful season. So, get all your friends together and plan to join Juanita and me, every Friday and Saturday.  See the flier below for address and click the link above for the menu that promises to please your palate!

There are a couple of new blogs you may find informative.  Go to the links and, if you're a member of WordPress, you can leave your comments.

On September 9 @ 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. EST, Joan Cartwright will interview pianist and composer Walter Bland on a new Internet radio show, The Arts Reporter.  Bland is a talented musician whose work speaks for itself. Be sure to tune in online  or call in to listen at 858-769-4949. Hit #1 to speak to the host and guest on BlogTalkRadio.

GOOD NEWS FOR WOMEN IN JAZZ!

THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF MUSICIANS - PENSION PLAN

It's our joy to share the gift of music with others. However, we may overlook the need to care for ourselves or feel inadequate in this activity because we don’t have “regular” jobs. Maybe we have no idea where to begin. What I’m referring to is a pension for our retirement years. Few musicians have a 401K package and that is even unreliable, in today’s financial environment.

The American Federation of Musicians offers an opportunity with a retirement and pension package that is in the top 1% in the country. With contributions of up to 15% of their earnings, musicians get vested in only five (5) years!

Learn about the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) - Local 655 online at www.afm655.com and explore this great opportunity. Women live longer and we must prepare for our later years, in a deliberate manner.

I just reinstated my membership. A representative of Local AFM 655 will meet with us to share the benefits of membership. Let’s take advantage this, now! I’m on the 5-year plan! ~ Melody Cole - 954-829-6009 - melocole1@aol.com
