WHO ARE YOU?

November is Native American Heritage and National Novel Writing Month

On November 9th, the American Business Women's Association of South Broward will present Joan Cartwright with the Spirit of Excellence Music Leader of the Year Award at the Signature Grand, in Davie, Florida. Founder and Executive Director of WIJSF, Cartwright is a musician, composer, vocalist and educator. She's authored nine books on music, poetry and history of jazz and women musicians, and the business of music. Since 2007, Joan has dedicated her life to researching, documenting, interviewing and writing grants to present the music of women composers. She's know to kids as "The Jazz Lady"!

The heritage of many Americans includes Native American. Cartwright said, "My mother's mother was Cherokee and my father's mother was Arawak. Therefore, I relate wholeheartedly to the experience of Native Americans." ~ Diva JC         Photo: Leo Reinfeld

The purpose of WIJSF is to recognize women musicians who are all too often overlooked in the annuls of musical history. From classical through jazz, women's music has been marginalized. One such woman is jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator Consuela Edmonia Lee who worked to keep jazz music alive by founding a music school in Harlem that was attended by one of my friends Sangoma Everett with whom I performed in Montreux, Switzerland in the 1990s. On October 29, Sangoma and other musicians paid tribute to Ms. Lee in New York City [see thumbnail in left column]. Noted drummer Max Roach is featured in the video at the left, discussing with Ms. Lee the importance of teaching children jazz performance. He is joined by Jothan Callins.

TWO FABULOUS PIANISTS

At the organ: Rhoda Scott and At the piano: La Velle

Sharon Marie Cline, our newest musical member is quickly becoming a favorite in LA's jazz club scene and performs with the finest jazz musicians and in the most exclusive rooms on the west coast.

Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Sharon Marie is an extraordinary vocalist who brings a unique & distinguished sense of jazz history to her song stylings. “Her approach to standards, show tunes and classic jazz is charming and refreshing…” says the LA Jazz Scene Magazine. She often employs rhythmic and tempo variations that breathe enjoyable new life into familiar standards. Her brilliant interpretations and her smooth mellifluous sound leave a lasting impression on her listeners, that is truly unforgettable!

Reminiscent of a time gone by, yet is distinctively contemporary, her vast background in musical theatre and concert performance shines through in the poise and humor that keep her audiences captivated. Accompanied by world class musicians on piano, bass, drums, and sax she fondly dubs them “The Bad Boyz of Jazz”. They are known for their aggressive rhythmic interpretations and their smooth sensual sound. Sit back, and listen to the romantic melodies of Sharon Marie Cline and The Bad Boyz of Jazz.

We're collecting original songs from members for our WIJSF Compilation CD Volume II to be released in January 2012. If you are a composer and have a song you want to contribute, please contact Joan at divajc47@yahoo.com. There is a $105 fee due by November 15 to cover the cost of artwork and reproduction. In return, you will receive 20 of the CDs for promotional purposes. See Volume I
