May is Mental Health Month

Music is the mastery of mind! ~ Diva JC

Sure, lots of musicians appear to be out of their minds but it is music that calms the beast. It's music that we need at the end of a stressful day. And music certainly does make for a pleasant, romantic evening with the one you love. So, it is music that lays the foundation for great mental health. My suggestion is to play music for your babies and grand babies to keep them feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, while you go about your daily chores. Mothers that play music for their children can usually attest to the fact that their children are happy.

GOOD NEWS FOR WOMEN IN JAZZ!

THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF MUSICIANS - PENSION PLAN

It 's our joy to share the gift of music with others. However, we may overlook the need to care for ourselves or feel inadequate in this activity because we don’t have “regular” jobs. Maybe we have no idea where to begin. What I’m referring to is a pension for our retirement years. Few musicians have a 401K package and that is even unreliable, in today’s financial environment.

The American Federation of Musicians offers an opportunity with a retirement and pension package that is in the top 1% in the country. With contributions of up to 15% of their earnings, musicians get vested in only five (5) years!

Learn about the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) - Local 655 online at www.afm655.com and explore this great opportunity. Women live longer and we must prepare for our later years, in a deliberate manner.

I just reinstated my membership. A representative of Local AFM 655 will meet with us to share the benefits of membership. Let’s take advantage this, now! I’m on the 5-year plan! ~ Melody Cole - 954-829-6009 - melocole1@aol.com

Our fundraiser on May 14, with Rick DellaRatta of Jazz For Peace will be held at ArtServe. The VIP list is full and regular- priced tickets are on sale for $35. We would like to have two shows. This depends on how many tickets are sold by April 30, at which time we'll decide to have one or two shows at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. WE NEED THE HELP OF ALL MEMBERS TO SELL TICKETS. The proceeds from our CD and ticket sales will go towards our tour.

We met again on May 1 at SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch at Riverwalk in Fort Lauderdale to distribute fliers for our May 14 Jazz For Peace Fundraiser. Congratulations to Priscilla Dames (hat) named one of 50 Most Influential Businesspeople in Miami-Dade.

Thanks to the City of Coral Springs Special Events Committee for our $500 grant to present AMAZING MUSICWOMEN at the Coral Springs Museum of Art on Thursday, May 26.

WHAT WE DO: [See HERSTORY and JAZZWOMEN DIRECTORY]

Besides increasing our membership of musicians and supporters, we continue to submit grant applications for performance funding. In January, we presented COMMUNITY MUSICWOMEN at four senior centers in Miami Beach, through a grant from Miami Beach Gala Grants.

EUROTOUR June, 2011

The Mayor of Fiuggi, Italy has invited a delegation of municipal officers and businesses from the City of Lauderhill to visit his City to discuss twinning. Time is of the essence to raise funds to purchase at least two airline tickets for WIJSF representatives.

We continue to work on raising funds for air fare and hotel for our EuroTour in June-July 2011. We're offering a great opportunity to one or more corporate underwriters, looking for visibility in Europe for their business. We will take a banner with us with our logo and the logos of our underwriters who provide us with a tax-deductible contribution of $10k-$100,000 for travel expense funding.

HOW UNDERWRITERS CAN BENEFIT:

Every time we are on stage, radio, television or reviewed in a newspaper, our underwriters will be mentioned and the banner will be displayed. A corporation could not purchase international advertisement of this grandeur for less than the sponsorship we are seeking.

The return on this investment cannot be determined, since the publicity needs of corporations interested in underwriting this venture are not known at this time. However, this should be considered a huge opportunity for any corporation looking to get their branding into international business circles.

Thank you,

"Keep your dream close to your heart!" ~ Diva JC
