June is Black Music Month
This month, we're submitting several grants for operating and programming funds. Photos [left] are of Parkway Middle School students the Jazz Band, led by Melton Mustafa, Jr. and Vocal Ensemble led by Lorna Lesperance on an arrangement of my song "Countin' On The Count" arranged by Dr. Malcolm Black. A wonderful time was had by all at ArtServe with Rick DellaRatta of JAZZ FOR PEACE CONCERT on MAY 14. We're still getting calls from attendees offering their compliments. Performances by Kim J, Robin Avery, Paul Banman, Melody Cole, Rick DellaRatta Trio and violinists Sons of Mystro were well received. Much thanks to our members Lorna Lesperance, Tracy Fields (WLRN 91.3), Wanda Trotter, Revella Carter, Heidi Richards Mooney and Lydia Harris for making this event a success. Especially, thanks to Lee Calhoun for manning the beverage table and Paul Banman for supplying all the sound equipment and instrumentation! Also, we appreciate our vendors Dianne Chandler of Dalila's Expressions and Johanie Aluc of BB's Boutique. To our sponsors Harbordale Spirits Shoppe and Sir Speeding Printing our heartfelt thanks! Finally, I would like to personally thank John D'Angelis and Debra Cerritelli of Jazz For Peace for guiding us through the step-by-step grant process to make this fundraiser possible. On
May 31, 2002, President Bush proclaimed June Black Music Month. [
It
's our joy to share the gift of music with others. However, we may
overlook the need to care for ourselves or feel inadequate in this
activity because we don’t have “regular” jobs. Maybe we have
no idea where to begin. What I’m referring to is a pension for our
retirement years. Few musicians have a 401K package and that is even
unreliable, in today’s financial environment.
