[April 1, 2021, Boynton Beach, FL] Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. published the third issue of Musicwoman Magazine and
the second issue of Musicman Magazine 

 
Simultaneously, the Women in Jazz South Florida Music Collection Volume 8 will release featuring the music of three Penwomen: Sheila Firestone, Grace Joy Reid, and Joan Cartwright, along with music from 10 other members of WIJSF.
On Thursday, April 15, 2021, at 7-9 p.m. Roberta DeMuro performs at Sugar Plum & Grumbling Growler Bookstore in Lake Worth, FL.
On Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 3 p.m. the Palm Beach International Jazz Festival will feature the Amazing Musicwomen Ensemble at the Rinker Playhouse, at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.

On Saturday, April 11, 2020, at 12:30 p.m., ASALH South Florida, Inc. presents Lunch & Learn with Dr. Joan Cartwright with Blues Women: First Civil Rights Workers. This lecture discusses how Black singers in the United States of America emerged from Spirituals and Blues to develop Jazz.  Their free-spirited songs delivered messages of liberation, signaling to Africans in America that they could be free.” Besides being effective entertainers, “Blues women provided the primary means of healing of the human spirit with their musical dalliances that we can forever be delighted with and grateful for. The lecture concludes that Blues women Mamie Smith, Gertrude ‘Ma’ Rainey, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt, and Miriam Makeba were the first civil rights workers because their lives and songs symbolized liberty in its rawest form by tapping into the human spirit.

On Saturday, April 11, 2020, at 3:00 p.m., Dr. Joan Cartwright, founder of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. will present her Amazing Musicwomen Lecture to college students. The women discussed in this lecture are Lena Horne, Pearl Bailey, Billie Holiday, Carmen McCrae, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughn, Dorothy Donegan, Celia Cruz, Eartha Kitt, Ruth Brown, Betty Carter, and Nina Simone.

On Saturday, April 11, 2020, at 7:30 p.m., The Amazing Musicwomen Ensemble takes the stage, once again, to bring you the best of Jazz in South Florida. Vocalists Libra Sene and Meri Ziev are joined by Kim Jay on saxophone and EWI, and Blanche Williams on flute, bringing us her original Spoken Word. The band consists of Musical Director Roberta DeMuro on keyboards, Susan Merritt on bass, Julie Jacobs on drums, and Mari Bell on keyboards.

Libra, Meri, and Kim are members of the board of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational organization that promotes women musicians, globally, through events, concerts, performances, clinics, lectures, workshops, articles, interviews, newsletters, courses, contacts, research, history, archives, websites, film, audio and video recording, and recognition.

The first edition features notable female drummer Gayelynn McKinney, the last drummer to perform with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. [January 3, 2018 - Delray Beach, FL] The Crest Theater at Old School Square in Delray Beach, FL, will presentBillie The Musical, starring Mimi Johnson (writer and producer), Rita Graham, Vannessa Stover, and Nadine Bone.  This stage play tells the story of Eleanor Fagan in her early years before she became the infamous jazz vocalist Billie Holiday. The play is scheduled for one performance on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office (561) 243-7922.

On Friday, August 29, 2014 at 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. Joan Cartwright, Founder of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. will speak at the street naming ceremony of Dinah Washington Way at 3800 S. Prairie Avenue, Chicago, IL. This will be an herstorical day for a legendary woman who gave so much to America's only original art form Jazz and Blues, organized by Alvin Carter-bey, The Impresario of Jazz on WHPK 88.5 FM.
On Saturday, August 30, 2014 @ 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Joan Cartwright will do a book signing and reading from two of her 11 books at the DuSable Museum, 740 E. 56th Place, Chicago, IL 60637. For information, call 773-947-0600 Ext. 273.
September 24 - 28, 2014 Joan Cartwright will present her paper Blues Women: The First Civil Rights Workers at the 99th Annual Convention of the Association of the Study of African American Life and History , in Memphis, TN. Cartwright will participate in the Authors Book Signing event on Thursday, September 25 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m..

Abstract

Black singers emerged from Spirituals and Blues to develop Jazz. Their free-spirited songs delivered messages of liberation, signaling to Africans in America that they could be free. This paper discusses how Blues women were the first civil rights workers because their songs symbolized liberty in its rawest form by tapping into the human spirit.

Joan Cartwright is a renowned veteran of the Jazz and Blues stage for 35+ years. She is a vocalist, composer, and author of 11 books, including her memoir, In Pursuit of a Melody, and her touring and teaching experiences in 16 countries, poetry, women in music, and the Business of Music available at her book store. Her titles include Amazing Musicwomen, So You Want To Be A Singer? and A History of African American Jazz and Blues with interviews with Quincy Jones, Abbey Lincoln, Dewey Redman, Lester Bowie, and other noted Jazz musicians and aficionados. Joan holds a B.A. in Music and Communication from LaSalle University, in Philadelphia, PA; an M.A. in Communications from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, and she is pursuing a DBA in Business Marketing at Northcentral University, Arizona.

In 2007, Joan founded Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to promote women musicians, globally. In 2014, WIJSF released its 4th compilation CD of 10 fabulous female composers. Joan hosts a weekly Internet radio show MUSICWOMAN at www.blogtalkradio.com/musicwoman, featuring women who compose and perform their own music and men who support them. Joan has two CDs – Feelin’ Good and In Pursuit of a Melody. Also, through WIJSF, Joan produced four compilation CDs (2011 – 2014) with 10 songs each from members of the organization.
