INTERVIEW

Diva JC with Lenore Raphael

"Simply one of the best pianists in the jazz mainstream/bebop genre...she always swings." ~ John Gilbert, Jazz staff writer SONY/Columbia, AllAboutJazz

"An exciting, energetic and interesting pianist...a great concert at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival." ~ Jacques Emond, Artistic Director

"This Steinway artist will knock your socks off." ~ Brian Hough, JassMan Magazine

"Her premier performance at  Ronnie Scotts in London was a huge success...an early return is likely." ~ Jack Masserikm JazzWise Magazine

Lenore Raphael's influences include the greats...Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Bud Powell. Critics have compared her hard swinging style to Oscar Peterson's, her harmonic voicings to Bill Evans, and her bebop chops to Bud Powell. With these influences she has created her own recognizable sound. As jazz critic Ricky Miller states in JazzUSA, "With all these influences she is just one thing - a GREAT pianist". On this solo concert, she will pay homage to these influences and include her tribute to Mr. Peterson, her original song "Blues For O.P."

A Steinway Concert Jazz Artist, and award winning jazz composer and clinician, Lenore Raphael has been called “Queen of swing” and “simply one of the best pianists in the jazz mainstream” by jazz writer John Gilbert. Listening to the recordings of Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans she developed her swinging and lyrical style, but she has distinguished her voice as her own. Lenore has performed at major jazz festivals and venues such as the Panasonic Village Jazz Festival (NYC), Ottawa International Jazz Festival, Jazz In The Sangres, Jazz At Lincoln Center, Birdland, Ronnie Scott’s (London), the S.S. Oosterdam Floating Jazz Festival and many more. Her performance at a tribute to Oscar Peterson during the IAJE convention in Toronto brought famed vocalist Jon Hendricks to say “She is one of the ‘baddest’ pianists out there. Lenore has 5 CDs on the Swingin’ Fox label and her 6th CD “Class Act” has just been released. With top play on radio stations across the globe her 2007 CD “Invitation” was up for GRAMMY nomination. Her original songs have been heard on Continental Airlines jazz stream and on the ASCAP jazz stream. A recent tour of the United Kingdom with a stop at Ronnie Scott’s famed club in London brought Lenore a review that stated “Raphael is one of the most highly inventive and rhythmic of players” (..Sheila Tacey, The Stage Magazine) and “Her swinging performance was in the mainstream with obvious runs and the technique of her idol, Oscar Peterson. A return engagement is guaranteed.”…Jack Masserik, JazzWise magazine. Along the way she has performed with such jazz greats as Clark Terry, Wycliffe Gordon, Ken Peplowski, Jon Hendricks, Warren Vache, Jay Leonhart, Marlene VerPlanck, Giacomo Gates and many more.
